Yes, Your Doula Can Be Free: How to Use Your Michigan Medicaid Benefits for Birth Support
If you’re pregnant and covered by Medicaid in Michigan, you have access to a powerful "secret" benefit: 100% covered doula services.
For a long time, having a doula—someone to support you physically and emotionally during labor and help you transition into parenthood—was something many families felt they couldn’t afford. But Michigan has recognized that doulas aren’t just a "extra"; they are essential for healthier moms and babies.
At Milk and Vine Co., I am a Medicaid-enrolled provider. That means if you are birthing at Holland Hospital, Zeeland Hospital, or another hospital in West Michigan, you can have professional doula support at zero out-of-pocket cost to you.
Here is the step-by-step guide on how to claim your benefit.
Step 1: Confirm Your Coverage
Michigan Medicaid and most Michigan Health Plans (like Priority Health, Meridian, or Blue Cross Complete) now cover doula services.
So that you can focus on your health and your baby without worrying about how to pay for professional support.
If you are enrolled in Medicaid coverage, you are likely eligible.
Step 2: No Referral Needed
Michigan has a "standing recommendation" for doula care.
You don't have to wait for a doctor's appointment or a specific "prescription" to start working with me. You are already cleared to get the support you need.
Step 3: What Exactly is Covered?
Medicaid covers a specific set of visits:
Prenatal visits to prepare for birth.
Continuous labor support (I am available at the Hospital for your entire birth).
Postpartum visits to help with healing, breastfeeding, and newborn care.
You get 12 total visits in addition to your birth support, these 12 visits can be split up and used however you'd like prenatal and postpartum.
You have consistent, dependable support from your second trimester all the way through those first blurry weeks at home.
Step 4: Hire a Medicaid-Enrolled Doula
To get these services for free, your doula must be on the MDHHS Doula Registry and enrolled as a Medicaid provider (like I am!).
I can bill the insurance company directly. You never see a bill, and you never have to deal with the paperwork.
Step 5: The "Doula + CFT" Difference
Because I am also a Craniosacral Fascia Therapist (CFT), I bring an extra layer of support.
As of now, I am offering free specialized bodywork for you and your baby before or after your appointment begins.
We can address baby’s latching or colic issues and your physical preparedness and recovery (like C-section scar healing).
